Calm: When training your dog, it is important that you are in the right frame of mind. Your dog may be over-enthusiastic, nervous or aggressive but it is crucial that you remain a calm handler, able to deal with situations without allowing emotions to get in the way.
Being able to correct your puppy for chewing your designer shoes whilst remembering that he/she didn't know that they cost £200... Then rewarding the chewing of a ragger, whilst still holding the remnants of a shoe in one hand!!
Consistent: Dogs are fairly simple animals that need rules in order to be happy and secure. To allow your dog to jump up at you when you're gardening and then to tell them off when you're wearing your business suit is not fair and it is not consistent. All members of the household - yes, even the kids, need to be consistent when training a dog...
Fair: Do not be afraid to say 'No' - if your dog does something wrong, tell them that they are displaying the wrong behaviour. Then give them something to do that you can praise. A stern 'No' for jumping up - a command to sit, then lots of praise for a good sit... Never use physical punishment for your dog - it is not as effective and generally will create a dog that is hand-shy, snappy or people aggressive.
In equal measure - it is as important to praise as to admonish, and as important to admonish as to praise...
